The French RivieraPeople rave about the French Riviera. I honestly don't know why. We were in Cannes while the film festival was on, mixing with the rich and famous. It was amusing walking down the streets and coming across a section of red carpet, all carefully roped off, apparently for the "right" people. We obviously weren't the "right" people. The place was also full of people with security passes and I think most of them were disappointed that I had no clue who they were when they walked past. From a distance, Nice looked great. Blue water lapping at the shore, but the beach is terrible. Its all stones, the hotels put down boards so you can walk into the water without hurting your feet. Beaches shouldn't look like that. Quite strangely, wandering around the back streets of Nice was the only place I felt wary on the whole trip. We did to an evening trip to Monte Carlo where I paid my €10 for the privilege of losing money in such a prestigious establishment. We were there the weekend before the Grand Prix so there was a feeling of surrealness as you're standing next to someone with €1000 chips talking to the person next to them saying "...the engine is running fine, but the gearbox is no good..." I quite liked Monte Carlo, then it was back to Nice for the nigth before heading off towards the Italian border.
